If you’re ready to get help with drinking or drug use, a surprise bill is the last thing you need. So, does Curative insurance cover addiction treatment?
Yes. Curative plans include substance use support, and the company advertises $0 in-network behavioral health care. What you pay depends on three things: your specific plan, whether the provider is in-network, and whether you completed your Baseline Visit on time.
Does Curative Cover Rehab at California Recovery Center?
California Recovery Center now accepts Curative insurance across every level of care at our Roseville campus, from medical detox and residential treatment to outpatient programs. Because costs depend on your specific plan and network status, our admissions team will walk you through exactly what to expect before you start. Our admissions team can verify your Curative benefits at no cost, before you commit to anything. Call (866) 864-1986 and have your Curative ID card ready. Coverage depends on your individual plan, so verification is always the first step.
Why verify before you call a rehab
Many people don’t know what their plan covers. In one study of privately insured U.S. adults with drug use disorders, 37.6% didn’t know whether their plan paid for drug treatment (PLoS One, 2020). Coverage on paper doesn’t guarantee care in practice, and a short verification call up front can spare you weeks of stress.
What Curative says it covers
Curative is an employer-sponsored plan built around a single premium with $0 copays and deductibles for in-network care. Curative is sold to employers headquartered in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, but it covers their employees wherever they live, including California. So if you work remotely or at a California office of a company based in one of those states, you may have a Curative plan.
For behavioral health, Curative states that its plans include therapy, psychiatry, and substance use support with no copays, deductibles, or bills in network. Two caveats apply. Not every Curative plan is identical. Benefits can vary by employer and plan type, so confirm your behavioral health coverage before you assume a service is included.
And the $0 claim carries footnotes, so read the one for your plan year.
How Curative members find addiction treatment
Curative doesn’t run its own addiction treatment programs. Instead, it works with outside providers, and the options available to you depend on your plan and where you live. Curative members can search for in-network providers in the member portal or app, or call Member Services for help.
If you live in Northern California, you don’t need to travel out of state for care. California Recovery Center accepts Curative insurance, and our admissions team can run a free benefits check to confirm exactly what your plan covers.
Mental health support matters too, since depression, anxiety, and trauma often go hand in hand with substance use. Ask Curative about therapy and psychiatry coverage, and ask any treatment center you’re considering whether it treats co-occurring conditions.
How coverage may vary by level of care
Insurers review each stage of addiction treatment differently, so a “yes” for one doesn’t guarantee the next.
| Level of care | What to confirm with Curative |
| Detox | Coverage at your chosen facility and whether prior authorization is needed |
| Residential or inpatient | Days initially approved and how often the plan reviews medical necessity |
| Partial hospitalization (PHP) | Authorization rules and day limits |
| Intensive outpatient (IOP) | Whether virtual programs are covered |
| Outpatient therapy | In-network clinicians via the member portal |
| Medication for addiction treatment | Pharmacy formulary and prescriber network |
The Baseline Visit
The most important Curative requirement is the Baseline Visit. Per the company, completing it within 120 days of your plan’s effective date preserves your $0 in-network benefits. Before starting treatment, confirm that your visit is recorded and how many days remain in your window. If it’s still open, scheduling it first is usually the smartest move. If the window has closed, ask what your cost-sharing becomes.
Federal protections that help you
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 generally stops plans from placing stricter financial requirements or treatment limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Parity doesn’t make treatment free or automatic, but it gives you grounds to challenge restrictions that look harsher than those on medical care. Depending on your employer plan type, the Affordable Care Act may also classify mental health and substance use services as essential health benefits, and it bars insurers from refusing coverage over pre-existing conditions. State laws may add protection.
Before you call
Have your Curative ID card, plan effective date, Baseline Visit status, the facility’s full name, and the recommended level of care in front of you. Keep a notebook for dates, names, and reference numbers. Then call Curative Member Services at (866) 864-1986 and ask:
- Is this facility and this exact program in network?
- Does it need prior authorization, and who submits it?
- What will I owe, if anything?
- How many days are approved first, and how does review work?
- Can you confirm all of this in writing?
Ask the treatment center to run its own benefits verification as well and be wary of any program that promises everything will be covered before it has checked. Out-of-network care, out-of-state facilities, and self-funded employer plans can all change the answer, which is why written confirmation matters.
If Curative denies coverage
Denials aren’t always final. Request the reason and clinical criteria in writing, then ask your clinician to request a peer-to-peer review. If that fails, file an internal appeal before the deadline in your letter, then request an independent external review. If you suspect a parity violation, contact your state insurance department. Keep every letter and reference number.
