On November 11, we honor and remember our veterans for their sacrifices and acknowledge the challenges they face upon returning to civilian life. For many veterans, the transition to civilian life involves facing the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and, often, substance abuse disorder (SUD). These issues can become deeply connected, making a complex and difficult recovery journey. Combined PTSD treatment and addiction programs are necessary to simultaneously address these challenges.
The Connection Between PTSD and Addiction in Veterans
Veterans usually experience PTSD, a mental health condition arising from exposure to traumatic events during their service. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) experience PTSD annually. Rates are similarly high among Vietnam veterans, with approximately 30% experiencing PTSD at some point in their lives. The emotional pain and stress that accompany PTSD can lead many veterans to turn to alcohol or drugs to numb these difficult feelings.
As veterans self-medicate with substances in hopes of alleviating the trauma they are in, they often become addicted and dependent on these substances. Research indicates that about one in three veterans with PTSD also struggle with substance addiction. Veterans with co-occurring disorders often experience more complicated challenges with interpersonal relationships, employments, and other daily activities. Recognizing and addressing these factors together is important for sustainable recovery.
CRC’s Veteran-Specific Dual Diagnosis Programs: PTSD Treatment and Addiction Programs
At California Recovery Center, our PTSD treatment program addresses addiction abuse simultaneously. Our veteran-specific dual-diagnosis programs provide a comprehensive approach that combines trauma-focused and addiction therapies. By treating both issues in tandem, we help veterans break free from the cycles of trauma and addiction that often hold them back from leading fulfilling lives.
CRC offers several key components in its veteran-specific programs, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
CBT is a core therapy in our program, helping veterans learn how to manage symptoms of PTSD by identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. CBT is highly effective for both PTSD and addiction because it empowers individuals to break the patterns of thought that trigger stress and cravings. By working with trained therapists, veterans can develop healthier coping mechanisms that reduce reliance on substances.
Alcohol Detox:
For veterans struggling specifically with alcohol addiction, CRC offers medical alcohol detox services. Detox is a critical first step in addiction treatment, providing a safe and supportive environment to manage withdrawal symptoms. By helping veterans overcome their physical dependency on alcohol, they are better prepared to address the underlying mental health issues that contribute to their alcohol addiction. CRC’s alcohol detox program is designed with veterans in mind, providing comfort, medical care, and support during this crucial stage of recovery.
Outpatient Programs:
Recognizing that each veteran’s situation is unique, CRC offers outpatient programs in Roseville that allow veterans to receive treatment while maintaining their daily responsibilities. Outpatient care provides flexibility, enabling veterans to attend therapy sessions and participate in group support without needing to stay in a residential facility. This is especially beneficial for veterans who may have family or work commitments and are seeking a balanced approach to recovery.
Trauma Therapy:
CRC’s trauma therapy programs provide a safe space for veterans to process the traumatic experiences that contribute to PTSD. Trauma therapy helps veterans work through painful memories, allowing them to release emotional pain without relying on substances. Our trauma-focused therapies are designed to support veterans in understanding their experiences, processing emotions, and rebuilding their sense of self in a way that promotes healing.
