Job Description:

The Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor assists clients in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. They plan, manage, and deliver services to individuals in treatment, utilizing case histories and clinical assessments to develop individualized, group, and family therapy treatment plans. Additionally, they may be involved in administration, community outreach, case consultation, and case management planning.

The Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor will facilitate and co-facilitate treatment groups and educational sessions, conduct individual counseling sessions, document client progress through chart notes and file entries, develop treatment plans, create relapse prevention strategies, and educate clients on substance use issues. They will also perform other duties as assigned by their supervisor while upholding the organization’s values and principles.

Education and Training Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be certified or licensed in compliance with California State law to provide alcohol and drug counseling, pursuant to Section 13010, Title 9 of the California Code of Regulations. This may be through CMDE, CCAPP, CCMP, or CADTP, CAADE or as a licensed professional, including but not limited to LCSW, LMFT, licensed psychologist, physician, registered intern, or any other classification listed in Section 13015.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • At least two years of experience working with a substance abuse population and treatment model
  • Current TB test results, valid ID, and background check clearance

  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM): Understanding the current DSM is essential for accurate assessment and diagnosis of mental health conditions.
  • American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria: Familiarity with ASAM criteria ensures appropriate patient placement and treatment planning.
  • Cultural Competence: Emphasizing cultural humility and competence, including considerations for individuals with disabilities, to provide inclusive and effective treatment
  • Case Management: Skills in coordinating comprehensive care and services for clients.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) Systems: Proficiency in using EHR systems for accurate and confidential clinical documentation.
  • Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT): Knowledge of MAT options to support recovery efforts.
  • Clinical Documentation
  • Co-occurring Conditions: Understanding the interplay between substance use and mental health disorders.
  • Confidentiality: Adherence to laws and ethical standards regarding client privacy.
  • Law and Ethics: Awareness of relevant legal frameworks and ethical considerations in counseling practice.
  • Professional Boundaries: Maintaining appropriate boundaries to ensure effective and ethical client relationships.
  • Delivery of Services

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform admission assessments and develop a preliminary treatment plan for assigned residents.
  • Assist clients in completing the Resident Health Questionnaire and Initial Screening Form (DHCS 5103); review, sign, and ensure intake documents are completed within 24 hours of admission.
  • At intake, document the client’s signs and symptoms using the CIWA/COWS form, beginning at the time of intake. Record observations and physical checks accurately, ensuring all documentation is signed as required.
  • Initiate discharge planning upon admission for assigned clients and update the discharge plan weekly.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, monitor and document client progress, and modify treatment as needed.
  • Facilitate multi-disciplinary treatment planning and updates for assigned clients, ensuring the inclusion of all treatment modalities and disciplines.
  • Conduct individual sessions for all assigned clients.
  • Participate in group counseling, educational sessions, and meetings as outlined in the program schedule.
  • Facilitate couples and family sessions as specified in treatment plans.
  • Coordinate with clients’ family members and support systems as necessary to provide progress updates during treatment.
  • Communicate with assigned managed care companies or referral sources for treatment planning and concurrent review.
  • Approving resident passes as needed.
  • Facilitate ancillary services and community referrals for assigned clients, including coordination of transportation.
  • Assist with legal commitments and court appearances.
  • Coordinate all necessary treatment services for assigned clients.
